The Year of the Flood (MaddAddam) by Margaret Atwood – Review

The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood is the second book in the MaddAddam series however you don’t need to read the first book, Oryx And Crake, to follow the information behind this book. The main point of this book is to expose the social and environmental instability of our time and the dangerous impacts it might have.

Atwood focuses on a group labelled as the Gardeners, an eco-friendly organization whose major focal point it to prepare for the soon to come “flood” by living as our ancestors lived in the past, recycling wherever possible and growing their own food so that their impact on the planet is as little as possible.

The book was easy to read, even though it took me a few months because for some reason I kept picking up other books. The characters are okay but for some reason, they kept running into each other even though they had been away from the initial community for a long time. There is also a surprising humour in what is really a dark dystopian book.

It is not a masterpiece but it’s an okay story, with not so farfetched arguments in regard to the state of the society in the book. The Year of the Flood has its problems, there are the little details here and there which don’t sound realistic and such. Yet it is still able to address its premise in a very wise way.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
