The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon by Richard Zimler – Review

This book is about Berekiah who’s a secret Jew in Portugal of the 16th century. His family declared that they converted and were “New Christians” after 1492, but they never stop professing their beliefs.

With the “Old Christians” marauding the streets of Lisbon, killing many Jews and plundering their possessions, Berekiah and his best friend star looking for answers, in what ends up being a huge adventure.

Zimler’s writing is beautiful and he managed to create one of the most complex plots I’ve ever read. The book is packed up with enormous historical detail and there’s a real sense of evolution in the characters as the story goes on.

Recommend this book to all the historical novels fans.

Keep on reading.
